Who doesn’t want a bright white smile?
Even people with naturally bright teeth may develop stains over time. Usually this happens as a result from drinking certain liquids such as coffee or red wine. When drinking certain liquids, the substances can penetrate the tooth enamel and cause discoloration. If your teeth have yellowed over time, our Greenwood Village office can brighten your smile!
Is Teeth Whitening Permanent?
Teeth whitening is temporary but may last several years. There are things you can do to help make it last longer. This can include things such as not drinking fluids that can stain teeth as well as maintaining good oral hygiene habits. And of course, seeing a dentist for regular cleanings and exams helps tremendously.
Will Teeth Whitening Hurt?
The primary active ingredient in tooth whitening gels is hydrogen peroxide. Some patients have teeth that are sensitive to peroxide and may have some discomfort as a result. Often this happens when consuming products that are either hot or cold. This typically is short term and goes away within 2 days of the whitening produce. There are a few things that you can do to prevent this which include:
- Take ibuprofen or another pain reliever
- Avoid beverages and food that are hot or cold
- Use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth.
Why see a Dentist for Teeth Whitening?
There are lots of options for at home whitening options. If you go to your local drug store or browse on Amazon, you’ll find a lot of at home whitening trays. Although these are less expensive than getting teeth professionally whitened, they do have a lot of drawbacks.
Both the at home whitening kits and the whitening that we do in our dental office both use hydrogen peroxide as the active ingredient. The difference is the at home whitening kits have a much lower concentration of peroxide, which means it takes more applications as well as more time to whiten teeth.
The reason the at home trays have a lower concentration of peroxide is since the trays are not custom fitted, some of the whitening gel will encounter your gums. If the concentration of peroxide is too high, it can cause gums to get burned.
However, when getting teeth whitened with dentist supervision, you can have a higher concentration of peroxide. The reason is dentists use either Zoom whitening or custom trays that will ensure your gums won’t encounter the whitening gel.
What Teeth Whitening Services do we Offer?
Hampden Dental Loft offers both Zoom teeth whitening in our office as well as offering custom trays. Both work extremely well and have their own advantages.
Zoom Teeth Whitening
Whitening with Zoom is a quick way to get fantastic results. The process takes place in our dental office and only takes about an hour and a half.
During this process we will apply a hydrogen peroxide gel to your teeth and use a special lamp that helps whiten the teeth. At the end of your appointment your will be able to walk out of our office with a much brighter smile.
Custom fitted whitening trays
Custom whitening trays will require two appointments. During the first appointment we will take a 3D scan of your teeth using our iTero scanner. After the scan is complete, we will have custom fitted whitening trays created. These trays will fit your teeth perfectly and not allow any of the whitening gel to encounter your gums.
The second appointment will be to try on the trays to confirm they fit properly. After this appointment, the patient can take the trays home along with the whitening gel.
To whiten teeth, the patient will use the trays for 4 hours at a time, 10 days in a row. After this if more whitening is needed the patient can use the trays again 3 days in a row, but no more than every 3 months.
